HLTV.org caught up with Josef "faveN" Baumann after BIG took down Complexity in their opening match at the IEM Katowice Play-In.

BIG entered the IEM Katowice Play-In stage off the back of a 7-9th place finish at BLAST Premier Spring Groups, an event at which the German side missed out on making the Spring Final and were not all too convincing in losses to G2, Ninjas in Pyjamas, and HEROIC.

They did, however, eliminate Liquid from contention in the Knockout Stage with an extremely one-sided victory, and so their overall form coming into the Play-In stage inspired some confidence in their prospects of advancing to the main event.

BIG will face FURIA in the upper bracket for a spot in IEM Katowice

The team got off to a successful start in their opening match against Complexity, defeating the North American hopefuls 16-12 on Anubis after a dominant T-side effort. HLTV quickly caught up with faveN after the match to discuss his absence from the game in recent months, the integration of Anubis into the team's map pool, and their upcoming match against FURIA.

Obviously, it's been a rough few months for you leading into 2023 after several periods away from the game due to various sicknesses. How has it been for you to be able to finally come back?

It feels amazing to play Counter-Strike again, but it also feels pretty hard to come back. All these strats you need to think about and the smokes and also, of course, the aim, which is a big part of the game. I was trying to grind myself back and it feels great to be back.

Is everything okay now? Can we expect you to stick around?

Yeah, I feel way better than last year. I feel really good, I'm super happy, and I think I can stick around longer than last year.

Has it been a little slow getting back into the game after a few months?

Yeah, it takes some time to get back to the old form, I would say, but I think I'm doing better and better game to game and I think it will be good soon again.

To start off the year you guys went to Copenhagen for the BLAST Groups. You ended up unsuccessful - can you tell me about the tournament, how it went from your perspective, and how you reflected on it afterwards?

The tournament was okay, I would say, we won against Liquid 2-0, two convincing wins against a top-four team in the world. We thought we would also beat Heroic, we were feeling actually pretty confident, especially because we practiced Ancient a lot and we knew Heroic were going to pick it, so we had a good game plan. Of course it's sad to lose and go to the Showdown, but we are looking forward.

Did you have time to adjust things for Katowice? Were there any issues specifically that you wanted to address?

In BLAST, we used it the tournament as a bootcamp, also, and we had a lot of time there and we worked a lot on our map pool. We also prepared for Katowice, yeah, but after BLAST we instantly needed to go here to play the Play-in, so we had no real time to prepare more. But in BLAST we prepared, yeah.

Anubis is personally my favorite map Josef "faveN" Baumann

We saw you play Anubis there and now in the first match in Katowice. How important is Anubis in your map pool now that you don't have Dust2?

It's really important and I think we also put more time into the map than other teams. I don't know, but it's just my feeling. Anubis is personally my favorite map, I really love the map, and we feel really good on it, it's really good that we play better on the map than on different maps. Since Dust2 is out we knew we need to have a new main map and maybe it's Anubis, who knows, but we feel really confident on it.

What do you like about the map?

I don't know, to be honest, I just really like the design and you can also as a T have many possibilities to make strats, splits, fakes, and stuff like this. It feels like that.

Tell me about FURIA and matching up against them for a spot in the group stage. Any sort of expectations early on?

Yeah, I think it will be a very quick match because FURIA likes the rushes and stuff like this. I hope we can win against them, they're a good team, their playstyle doesn't really fit our playstyle, so it will be tough, but may the better team win.
